Abstract

In the context of discussions about the relationship between opera and innovation, we propose the description and analysis of the experience of 'óperas urbanas' (urban operas), created by the playwright and director Eduardo Sánchez Medina, in Medellin, Colombia. The study takes as corpus two urban operas: Where? Where?... City! (2005) and Oh! Santo Domingo (2006) and problematizes four aspects: the characterization of urban opera as an abstract poetic; its composition processes (genetic poetic); the social, artistic and political principles that determines its genesis; the social impact of urban opera in Medellin community.
