Thomas Percival: Contribuciones, ética Médica y su legado

Resumen

Thomas Percival (1740-1804) publicó en el año 1803 su libro más célebre, titulado: Code of Medical Ethics, el cual es considerado el primer código institucional de ética médica. Los antecedentes históricos, influencia filosófica de David Hume y John Gregory sumado a los cambios sociales y culturales del siglo XVIII en Inglaterra, fueron imperativos esenciales para el desarrollo de Medical Ethics. Pero su obra no se limitó únicamente al ámbito ético y filosófico, fue un estudioso de la epidemiología y la salud pública, lo cual se vio reflejado en las diferentes medidas que implementó para evitar los brotes de Tifus en la ciudad de Manchester. Su interés político lo llevó a ser un gran impulsor de leyes laborales, que salvaguardaba a la población obrera. La importancia de la relación médico- paciente como un elemento esencial en la recuperación del paciente, lo llevaron a expresar tanto en su obra científica, como filosófica una visión holística del ser humano, la cual trascendió hasta la actualidad. /// Thomas Percival (1740-1804) published in 1803 his most famous book, entitled: Code of Medical Ethics, which is considered the first institutional code of medical ethics. The historical background, philosophical influence of David Hume and John Gregory, together with the social and cultural changes of the 18th century in England, were essential imperatives for the development of Medical Ethics. But his work was not limited only to the ethical and philosophical field, he was a student of epidemiology and public health, which was reflected in the different measures that he implemented to prevent Typhus outbreaks in the city of Manchester. His political interest led him to be a great promoter of labor laws, which safeguarded the working population. The importance of the doctor-patient relationship as an essential element in the recovery of the patient, led him to express both in his scientific and philosophical work a holistic vision of the human being, which has transcended to the present day.
