Abstract

In September 1955, General Eduardo Lonardi became the last minute leader of the Revolución Libertadora, military coup that sent Juan D. Perón into exile. In the midst of combat he proclaimed himself President and immediately started addressing workers in order to establish a feasible dialogue. After stating in his first speech to the Nation that his main aim was to reestablish the civil and political rights, moved by his democratic beliefs, he started an uncertain road towards the democratization of the Labor organizations, Peron´s movement proclaimed backbone. The strife that put face to face the excluded minority left labor leaders and the peronist majority for the control of the unions became an important issue within a government divided between those who wanted to banish all that was peronist from the face of earth, and those few collaborators, as the Minister of Labor Cerrutti Costa, who followed Lonardi´s lead in favor of a united Argentina. This article tries to show how this conflict evolved from the beginning to the 13th of November when another coup finished with the first government of the Revolución Libertadora, with a special focus on the development of policies towards the democratization of the Labor Unions that composed the General Confederacy of Labor (CGT).
