Relaciones comerciales franco-argentinas 1880-1914
Abstract
This article deals with the subject from the standpoint of the commercial diplomacy of the Argentine governments during this period. Custom duties were one of the main problems faced by Argentine Presidents. By the end of the XIX century, protectionism prevailed in Europe. France also adhered to this kind of policy, though the implementation depended on the particular economic situation of the country. The tariff war, the so called “ley de cadenas o candado”, the Méline tariff are some of the difficulties our exports of cattle, meat and crops had to overcome. The successive claims of Argentine diplomats couldn´t break the protectionist barrier defended by 20 million of French farmers. The article ends with the treaty of January 14, 1918, whereby, after the end of the First World War, Argentina would supply crops to France and grant it a loan to finance the purchase.
