The Memoirs of Regent Heredia are an important source for understanding the process that triggered the revolution and subsequent independence of Venezuela, as well as its consequences. In this article we investigate those factors or characters that Heredia points to as directly responsible for the catastrophe that led to the disintegration of Spanish imperial power and the subsequent anarchy.
