Abstract

This essay pays attention to the sound of 'afro-porteño' music and to its social context comprising its artists and the general public. lt is a musical and social analysis, so far neglected, of the afro-porteño musical repertoire that aims at two main objectives: 1) giving an overview of what is this repertoire nowddays and how it sounds and 2) analyzing it as a process to give Iight on its role in black idcntity and on the links created between the afro-porteño community and the society al large.
