Abstract

The purpose for this article is to think in a critical cultural perspective about the relevance and the sense of musical traditional genres in the province of La Rioja nowadays. We focus on the most ancient genres: baguala and the andean vidalita, in the town of San Blas de los Sauces. We analyze the changes and the permanence in both structures and the development of the discursive dimension, taking into consideration as the main point of reference the PhD thesis by Isabel Aretz (1978). The genres are raised as aesthetic phenomena situated in a historical and social context. In this framework, we analyze the production and receptions modes from observations of ethnographic style, as well as the interviews to musicians, vidaleros, neighbours, government employees and cultural references.
