This article explores the different ways in which the figure and work of Franz Liszt were received on the nineteenth-century Russia by theorists and composers. From the Hungarian composer visits made to Russia during the 1840's, his figure was used by the critic Vladimir Stasov to characterize and legitimize in a mythological way the new musical tradition born in Russia. This image was a serious obstacle for most of the twentieth century approach to the study of Russian music. The work of modernist composers in Russia, however, demonstrates that the Liszt‟s reception, and thus the image of nineteenth-century Russian music, was quite far from the canonical characterization proposed by Stasov.
