Abstract

Brahms‟s German Requiem has been the object of multifold theologicmusicological analyses due to a couple of distinctive attributes: 1. it belongs to the requiem gender although the composer substituted the Missa pro defunctis text by his own selection of biblical verses, 2. the motivic content of its seven numbers is derivative from the chorale melody Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten. This paper highlights an autonomous motive -not related to the chorale melody- which appears in five of the seven numbers and whose meaning would be the symbol of Redemption.
