Abstract

The study of the River Plate polka ('polca acriollada') presents different aspects related to the diverse spheres where it widely spread during one and a half century. These spheres include from the (family or social) salon to the regional popular music. Therefore we study different types of polkas from a musical point of view –the ones of the past and the ones which reach to our days. Among the latter, some do have a traditional popular force today, and others are the very common stage recreations.
