Abstract

We study two interventions of the Organization of American States in the artistic legitimation of the Argentine composer Carlos Guastavino (1912-2000). The first occurred in 1955, when he was included in the first issue of the Composers of the Americas series, thanks to the dissemination of the Music Division of the PanAmerican Union, led by Guillermo Espinosa. The second was the tribute accomplished in Washington in 1987 by the CIDEM (Inter-American Music Council), whose General Secretary was Efraín Paesky. Following some categories established by Pierre Bourdieu, we postulate that, with more than thirty years between them, these initiatives trace a course in the public recognition of the composer that goes from a first instance of artistic legitimation to an instance of consecration.
