Abstract

This article explores the impact of the Spanish Civil War in Argentina, convener historiographical core on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the beginning of the conflict. Beyond diagnoses that have indicated both a major alignment in favour of the Second Spanish Republic as an inevitable social polarization, favoured by the narrow Spanish-Argentine ties, is explored the impact in different local areas of ideological and cultural controversy circulating in the Hispanic world about the role of democracy, Catholicism, communism and fascism. The journey allows re-examine rejections, identifications and accessions to the Republican Spain, as well as reasons to support the official policy of abstention, taken as a reflection of the complex fabric of society Argentina.
